The shape of the week — one thing a day: a single morning outing (out ~8:45–9, home by 11:30 for Ben's lunch at 11:45 and cot nap 12:30–2:30/3), then unscheduled afternoons — pool, lawns, shore, the flat lakeside path from the hotel, or a stroll into Pooley Bridge for the playground and gingerbread. No climbing sessions, no boat schedules, no afternoon bookings. The boys get their scrambling DIY-style on the hikes — Lanty's and Aira Force are full of clamber-friendly rocks. Thursday is the one different day: Lowther Castle at 10, and Ben's nap goes buggy-style so nobody has to leave the playground. Everyone at Rampsbeck at 6, nightly.

Boys leave — allow time, the informal car park can be busy. Route: A66 west past Keswick, Braithwaite turn (signed Lorton/Whinlatter/Newlands — NOT Portinscale), through the village, left after the campsite opposite Fellside café, left over the bridge signed Newlands, ~1 mile to the cattle grid, then 0.5 mile to the informal parking area (no buildings). Look for the blue van and park in front of it. W3W: inefficient.workroom.puzzled — but don't turn down the track; they'll WhatsApp a route video a few days before. Can't find them: 07908 884035.

The scramble: 2–2.5 hours up Stoneycroft Ghyll — wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids provided, and yes, you go under the water. No facilities at the car park (last toilets: the hotel; small shops in Braithwaite). Boys home ~12:15 — in time for regular lunch.
9:00–10:45
The ladies' walk: the hotel's own Another Place Walking Loop — 5.8 km, ~1h40, straight from the front door, easy-to-moderate with one good climb and big Ullswater views. Ben rides the carrier (the climb rules out the buggy); the 5-year-old can walk it or opt for the pool instead. Back by 10:45 for coffee on the terrace — well inside Ben's 11:30 clock. Flatter alternative: the Ullswater Way shore path through the hotel's own lakeside, out-and-back toward Pooley Bridge, buggy-tolerant and turn-around-whenever.

Everyone back together at the hotel — littles at 11:45, boys ~12:15. If the boys are starving sooner, Bryson's of Keswick is two minutes off their route home.

Morning: Lowther Castle & the Lost Castle buggy-nap day

Everyone to Lowther Castle (15 min) for opening: the kids get a long, unhurried run at the Lost Castle — one of the UK's largest adventure playgrounds — while the adults rotate through the ruins, the Story of Lowther exhibition and the gardens.

Buggy-nap day: Ben goes down in the buggy at Lowther while the big kids carry on playing — no dash home. Head back whenever everyone's done (~2–2:30); he transfers to the car seat or finishes the nap on arrival.

Unscheduled: pool, lawns, shore, or the stroll into Pooley Bridge for the playground and a Granny Dowbekin's gingerbread on the way home — Pooley is en route.

Earliest start of the week: whole family to Glenridding (15 min), walking by 8:50, up to Lanty's Tarn and the Keldas viewpoint — the classic postcard view down the length of Ullswater. One steepish 20–30 minute pull the 5-year-old will conquer with snack bribes, rocky knolls at the top for DIY scrambling, Ben in the carrier. Back at the van 11:05, home 11:25.

Breakfast, pack, check out, and be at Aira Force (10 min) for 9am — the car park's quiet, the falls are yours. The 1.7-mile waterfall loop at kid pace: wooden bridges, viewing platforms, red squirrels, the 65ft fall, and plenty of rocks for a last DIY scramble. Buggy on the lower paths, carrier above. Away by 11:10.
🍴 Lunch
Drive to Penrith (~25 min) and swing into Booths — practically next to the station — for a proper picnic (their sandwiches and sausage rolls are a cut above). Ben eats by 11:45.
12:15
Van back at Enterprise ~12:15–12:35; they shuttle you round to the platform. Ben's nap happens on the train, rocked to sleep by the West Coast Main Line by 1:30.

10 minutes south on the A592. National Trust car park (CA11 0JS): £6 for 2h / £7.50 for 4h, free for NT members — a family membership can pay for itself on a trip like this. The circular waterfall walk is 1.7 miles: wooden bridges, viewing platforms, the 65ft main fall, and boulders everywhere for freelance scrambling. Steps on the upper loop — buggy below, carrier above. Tea room, toilets and picnic tables at the car park. No swimming at the falls.
15 minutes to Glenridding; park in the village pay-and-display (toilets there too). The path climbs from the back of the village past Rattlebeck Bridge — one steepish 20–30 minute pull — to the tree-ringed tarn, with the Keldas viewpoint (the postcard shot down the length of Ullswater) two minutes beyond, and rocky knolls made for showing off to grandparents. Free apart from parking.
15 minutes north-east via Pooley Bridge, whole family, arriving for the 10am opening. One admission covers the castle ruins, the Story of Lowther exhibition, the gardens and the Lost Castle playground (5-minute woodland walk from the courtyard; towers, zip wires, slides). Lunch at the courtyard café ~11:30, then Ben goes down in the buggy at 12:15 while the big kids keep playing — no dash home, leave when everyone's done. Open 10–5 (last entry 4). Lowther Castle (Thu, 10am): deliberately not pre-booked — no timed entry or capacity caps, so make the weather call Wednesday evening and book online that night or over breakfast (their site asks for online booking, but same-morning counts). Cheapest combo: family ticket £45 (2 adults + 3 kids) + 2 extra adults £32 = £77; Ben (under 3) free.

Hotel: early check-in email sent — chase if no reply a week out; confirm the cot is made up for a ~1:15pm arrival.
Kit: waterproofs and spare shoes for all, swim kit, toddler carrier, buggy (Thursday's Lowther nap rides in it), carsickness kit for the 5-year-old (front-row seat, window cracked, ginger chews) — the ghyll guides provide wetsuits.

Built for this trip specifically: train there and back (pack in few big bags — you need hands for three children on the platform, and the van swallows luggage at Penrith), 4 nights, cool showery weather, one wet adventure, nightly 6pm restaurant dinners.
⚠ Sort before you pack: the Enterprise confirmation doesn't mention child seats. Call them (01768 216440) and add 1 infant seat + 2 boosters to the booking — or plan to bring your own (an inflatable/backpack booster travels well; an infant seat on a train does not). This is the one item that can genuinely derail Day 1.
The trip-critical kit
Toddler carrier — Wednesday's loop, Friday's Lanty's climb, Saturday's upper falls path all need it.
Buggy — it's the nap infrastructure: Day 1 lawns, Thursday's Lowther buggy-nap. One that reclines flat and handles gravel.
Ben's sleep kit: sleeping bag, comforter, white-noise machine/monitor, travel blackout blind (7pm bedtime, September evenings are light), familiar cot sheet. Cot itself is booked at the hotel.
Max's carsickness kit — lives in the van: ginger chews, sick bags, wipes, water, full change of clothes. Front-row seat, window cracked.
Weather (15–18°C, showers likely)
Waterproof jacket per person — no exceptions, no umbrellas (your hands are taken).
Waterproof trousers for all three kids; wellies or second pair of shoes each — wet-shoe rotation is the difference between a good and bad Thursday.
Layers: fleece each, warm hats (it's breezy at Keldas), suncream and sunhats too — September does both.
